The Groove That Got ‘Em Moving

Raised in New Orleans, David Shaw caught music’s wild pulse early. Tom Petty’s snarl lit him up at 15. Meanwhile, Zack Feinberg, a Jersey transplant, shredded guitar to Stevie Ray Vaughan’s fire. While buddies chased 9-to-5s, they busked on street corners, craving soul. By ‘07, they formed The Revivalists, gunning for glory. So, music became their hustle, a way to roar their truth. Their relentless grind shot ‘em into the big time.

Lives Soaked in Sweat and Song

David, born in Hamilton, Ohio, landed in NOLA’s melting pot. Zack, from Montclair, New Jersey, soaked up the city’s funk. But they both loved The Meters, giving their sound that Crescent City swagger. David sang in local bars; Zack jammed in college dives. Then, their 2015 album Men Amongst Mountains broke through, hitting No. 2 on Billboard’s Alternative chart.

Their 2018 single “Wish I Knew You” went platinum. Also, David’s married to Claire Shaw; Zack’s single. Now, they’re tearing up stages, based in New Orleans. Their world’s a mix of barroom grit and soulful dreams.

Career Highs and Barroom Brothers

The Revivalists are David (vocals), Zack (guitar), with Ed Williams (pedal steel) and George Gekas (bass). Plus, they’ve toured with Alabama Shakes in 2016. Their bond with producer Dave Cobb shaped their 2022 album Pour It Out Into the Night. Meanwhile, their high-octane live clips keep fans buzzing on social media.

They popped up in a 2019 PBS special, Live from Tipitina’s. They’ve crushed Bonnaroo in 2018 and Lollapalooza in 2023. Also, they cut a track for a 2021 Allman Brothers tribute album. In 2024, they launched Revivalists’ Roadhouse Merch, owning their vibe. Their raw, anthemic hooks are their signature.

Awards and Street Cred

They’ve got serious juice. In 2017, “Wish I Knew You” nabbed an iHeartRadio Music Award nomination for Best New Rock Artist. Also, Men Amongst Mountains went gold. They scored a 2019 Billboard Music Award nod for Top Rock Song. And “All My Friends” hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult Alternative chart. These wins scream their roots-rock reign.

Biggest Jams

  • “Wish I Knew You”: A 2016 single from Men Amongst Mountains, written by Shaw, No. 1 on Adult Alternative.
  • “All My Friends”: A 2018 track from Take Good Care, written by Shaw, also No. 1 on Adult Alternative.
  • “Keep Going”: A 2015 song from Men Amongst Mountains, written by Shaw, a live staple.
  • “Kid”: A 2023 single from Pour It Out Into the Night, written by Shaw, a radio hit.

Drama That Stirred the Pot

Ain’t no clean run here. In 2019, a bandmate’s brief exit over “creative differences” got fans whispering. But they patched it up, stronger than ever. Also, a 2020 festival cancellation due to weather pissed off ticket holders, though they streamed a makeup set. Plus, David’s 2022 comments on music’s streaming grind sparked debate, but he held firm.

Back in ‘16, a rumored label tussle over their album’s sound got loud, but they pushed through. And a 2021 tour delay due to global chaos bummed fans, though they dropped a killer virtual gig. These scrapes, rough as they were, showed their fight.

A Night That Lit the Street: Lollapalooza 2023

Alright, let’s roll back to August 2023, when The Revivalists tore up Lollapalooza, a night David called “our NOLA gut-punch” over beers with a roadie. The Chicago crowd—40,000 deep—went wild as they kicked off with “Keep Going,” Shaw’s voice a soulful growl, Feinberg’s guitar ripping like a chainsaw. Williams’ pedal steel wailed, Gekas’ bass thumped, and the stage glowed like a Bourbon Street neon dive. Then, bam—“Wish I Knew You” hit, and it was straight-up chaos. The crowd sang, dancing in the summer heat, beers flying. Some fan chucked a Mardi Gras bead necklace onstage; Shaw caught it, slung it around his neck, and laughed. The band was locked in, sweating buckets, and the vibe? Pure, gritty magic. For The Revivalists, it wasn’t just a set—it was a damn street party. That night, they proved their roots-rock can shake the earth.

Legacy and the Long Hustle

They’re still out there, shredding festivals and sweaty clubs, their fire blazing. Their roots-rock and soul stew keeps inspiring every band chasing heart and hooks. Despite the bumps, their soul’s true, born in New Orleans’ sticky streets. Their shows are a brawl—part revival, part barroom riot. When they belt, “Wish I knew you,” you feel it—they’re roots-rock renegades, built to burn forever.
